The November 9th Voices United meeting was a “two-fer” on the topic of healthy aging.  In the morning, 14 members walked over 3,000 steps (about 1.5 miles) burning nearly 100 calories each.  This was an enjoyable warmup for our healthy aging presentation.

We met again at 11:30 at the Clubhouse for fellowship and a delicious lunch before tuning in to our speaker of the day, Joyce Latham, a Robson resident and member of Voices United.  She has an impressive resume including an MS in Education from John Carroll University and an MBA from the University of North Texas.  She was an Adjunct Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, and a Visiting Professor at George Washington University’s Center for Excellence in Municipal Management.

Joyce pointed out that we have control over the health of our bodies:  we can take steps to delay or prevent Alzheimer’s and other cognitive decline.  The

vast majority of deaths in the U.S. are caused by noncontagious diseases such as heart disease and stroke, cancers, lung diseases, diabetes, and others.  Most of these diseases are driven by unhealthy lifestyle habits.  We were encouraged to learn to do new things, treat high blood pressure, stop smoking and manage our weight.  Supplements that may be taken are probiotics, B Complex and Omega-3a, she said.

So, let’s get mobile!  Get a minimum or 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week.  Hike, play pickleball, hit that tennis ball, play golf or take advantage of the many other great options we have here at Robson.  Live socially, actively and enjoy healthy eating.  Don’t forget those most important 7-8 hours of sleep per night.  Yawn, stretch, sleep. (We’ll see you in the morning.)

Voices United has many other activities besides our monthly luncheons.  Discussion groups meet the third Thursday evening and the 4th Tuesday afternoon each month.  On December 3rd, the social committee is planning to go see the movie Wicked.

Voices United is a non-partisan group of Robson Ranch women who share progressive values, perform community outreach, provide civic awareness and social contact for members…and have a good time!!  We’re a 501(c)3 group.  Our annual dues are $20.  For more information, visit our website at voicesunitedrr.org.
